The next few days flew by in a flurry of activity. Between interviewing prospective employees and supervising the final touches on her mother’s apartment, Anna hardly had a moment to worry about her upcoming visit to the prison or the now regular faint reminders from the knife that she had to look into Mary Anne’s death.

Late Friday afternoon Carlos arrived. Wes and the laborers helped unload the sewing machines and install them in the sewing room. Carlos laid out the scissors, irons, and other tools on the cutting tables and then roamed through the building admiring the work.

“Miss Anna, this was a smart move. When you first told me, I thought you had lost your mind. I worried how you would maintain clients.”

“Carlos, you know clients rarely come into the shop. And when they do, I’ll have accommodations for them.”

“I can see that, now, but still, it is a very long drive from the airport in Atlanta.”

“You think I didn’t do my homework, Carlos?” She showed him into her large empty office beyond the reception area. “There is a regional airport barely five miles from here that can handle private planes.”

“Jet airplanes?”

“Of course.”

“I never would have thought that. Very, very good.”

She still chuckled internally at his pronunciation of words. Very, very, came out as beddy, beddy. “Tomorrow we’ll take a ride around the area and you can see everything for yourself. I’ve made reservations for you at a nice motel. But, first, dinner. You’ll meet the rest of the people at the restaurant.”

“I think I have already met the most important of your people already, Miss Anna. Gloria will be happy to hear my news.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Mr. Michaels. He is very good.”

“He is, but what’s your happy news?”

Carlos’s brown eyes twinkled when he grinned at her. He wagged a finger. “You cannot keep a secret from Carlos. I have eyes. I see.”

She looked at him through half-closed eyes, taking a moment to absorb what he said. When she realized he meant her and Wes, she clamped her jaw shut prepared to deny any relationship.

Wes knocked on the doorjamb. “Are we all set to go? The others will be waiting.”

Relieved by the interruption, Anna collected her purse and the three of them rode in Wes’s truck to the restaurant where Violet, Chris, Grace, Susan Forbes, six of the regular workmen, and Carson Mead sat at a large table in the private meeting room. Everyone had drinks before them.

Carson stood when they entered, looking none too happy about being made a part of the group rather than being treated as special. He had asked to be in attendance when Carlos arrived, but Anna could think of no reason why he should be there. Carson would not have jumped right in and helped carry the heavy machines, nor had he been around all week while Anna and Wes tried to salvage their possessions from the fire, though it had been pretty much a fruitless pursuit.

Anna chose to ignore his petulant
